A TOTALISATOR COMMISSION. AUCKLAND, December 22. Some members of the New South Wales Totalisator Commission arrived m Auckland by the P. and 0. steamer Mcolian this morning. The Commissioners , who visit, New Zealand areMessrs R. H. Levien, Albert Bountndl, J. C. L ? Fitzpatrick, Robert Hollas,W. J. Peters, and. the Hon. William McCourt (members of the Legislative Assembly), and the Hons. B. B. O'Connor, M.L.C' and James Wilson, M.L.C. Mr R. H. Levien, M.L.A., is president of the Commission, and Mr W. S. Christie, StTgeant-at-Arms m the New South Wales Parliament, is secretary. Messrs. Fitzpatrick and Bountnell will not reach Auckland until December 27. Messrs. R. D. Meagher, H.D., Morton, and J. Perry, who are .also members of the Commission, have not come to New Zealand, but will join their colleagues m Tasmania. Interviewed by a reporter this morning, Mr Levien said that they had a very pleasant passage across m the Mooltan. "We have," he said, "been appointed as a Royal Commission by the Government of New South Wales, and we represent both branches of the Legislature. Nine of us are members of the Legislative Assembly, and two are members of the Legislative Council. The object of the Commission is to inquire fully into the working of the totalisator throughout New Zealand and Australia, and to collect all the evidence possible both for and against, as to whether it is a means of encouraging or suppressing gambling. ■ We desire that all persons who feel so . inclined should come before the Commission to give us all the help thc-'y possibly can by means of their statements.''
